With patios and gardens becoming more and more a functional space to your home, garden furniture is becoming a part of the overall home furnishing. Garden furniture gives you a place to relax, and enjoy your garden and backyard. A chair or garden bench is much more comfortable than sitting on the ground. You will need to do some research, however, before buying garden furniture. You’ll want to make sure you get the furniture that fits your needs, and your garden area.

You should decide whether you want furniture that will be left in place all year, or if you want to get something that you can fold or stack, and put away for the winter. If you live in a warmer climate, then you may want to get furniture that you can leave out all year. If you live in a colder climate, you may still want furniture in place all year, especially if you don’t have room to store your furniture.

Choose garden furniture made from an appropriate material for your needs, and your decor. Plastic furniture is lightweight, and easy to move around. Plastic garden furniture is also cheap, but it just doesn’t look as good as other materials. Wrought iron furniture looks good, and is durable. Wrought iron furniture, however, is heavy, and not as easily moved as plastic or wood furniture. Comfort, or lack thereof, may be a factor in wrought iron furniture, although you can buy cushions to make it more comfortable. Wood is probably the best material for garden furniture, since it is relatively light, and it looks good. Teak is probably the best choice for wood garden furniture.

If you choose wooden garden furniture, you should make sure that only premium grade lumber is used in the construction, without knots, cracks, and other defects. The joints should be mortise & tenon joints, rather than bolts. The joints should be glued together with epoxy based glues, which won’t be affected by rain. If there are any metal fittings on the furniture, they should be made of non-corrosive metals, such as brass, aluminum, or stainless steel.

Once you have your furniture, it will require some maintenance to keep it in good shape, and functional. Plastic furniture should be cleaned occasionally with warm soapy water. Wood furniture should also be cleaned from time to time with warm soapy water. Make sure that all of the joints are intact, and tight. You don’t want your furniture falling apart when you sit down. Wrought iron furniture should be checked from time to time, to see that the paint is not cracked or peeling. If the paint is peeling, then you should touch up the paint, to keep the metal from rusting.

Take a look around, and decide what garden furniture fits your needs. You may want a bench, or a few chairs, or maybe a small table. If you take the time to do your research, you’ll find garden furniture to fit your backyard, and that will last.
